Hungary on the Brink of Historic Turnaround: Tisza Party on Course for Two-Thirds Majority – Orbán Congratulates Challenger Magyar

Budapest faces a political earthquake: a historic power shift is emerging in Hungary's parliamentary elections. The opposition Tisza party, led by Péter Magyar, is clearly in the lead according to initial projections and could even achieve a two-thirds majority in parliament.

After 16 years in power, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has already congratulated his challenger on their election victory – a remarkable step for the long-serving head of government, who ruled Hungary with an iron fist since 2010. The record turnout in this election shows the enormous mobilization potential that has been triggered by the political change in the neighboring country of Austria.

If the trend continues, this would mark the end of an era characterized by increasing tensions with the European Union, controversial judicial reforms, and close alignment with Russia. A change of government in Budapest could have far-reaching consequences for Austria and the entire EU – particularly on issues of European cooperation and common foreign policy.
