Trump telephones Putin and Zelensky on his 80th birthday

Vienna, June 14, 2026 – US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky on his 80th birthday. The calls took place just days before the G7 summit, where the war in Ukraine will once again be a central focus.

Just under an hour with the Kremlin

According to Russian presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov, the phone call between Trump and Putin lasted just under an hour. Trump reportedly emphasized the need to end hostilities and signaled his readiness to influence European allies. Details about specific proposals or concessions were not disclosed. The Kremlin confirmed the conversation without providing further details. It was the first known direct phone call between the two leaders in several weeks.

Zelensky between pressure and hope

Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Zelensky on the same day. Kyiv has been under increasing pressure from Washington for months to show willingness to negotiate. The Trump administration has repeatedly indicated that continued US military aid could be tied to progress in peace talks. Since the beginning of the war in February 2022, Ukraine has received more than 200 billion euros in Western aid, with more than 75 billion dollars coming from the US alone. Zelensky most recently reaffirmed that any solution must respect Ukraine's territorial integrity.

European nervousness ahead of the G7 summit

The upcoming G7 summit in Canada will be a litmus test for Western unity on the Ukraine issue. European heads of state and government fear that Trump could pursue a deal with Moscow that is negotiated over the heads of the EU. Chancellor Karl Nehammer had already emphasized in the run-up to the summit that Austria, as a neutral country, could play a mediating role without deviating from the clear condemnation of the Russian war of aggression.

Classification for Austrian readers

The developments are relevant to Austria for several reasons. As a neutral state with traditionally good contacts with Moscow and as the host country for international organizations like the OSCE, Vienna could play a role in possible negotiations. Economically, the war has massively impacted energy prices in Austria – prior to 2022, gas imports from Russia still accounted for around 80 percent of Austria's needs. Furthermore, over 90,000 Ukrainian refugees now live in Austria. An end to the conflict would have direct effects on domestic energy security, inflation, and migration policy. Trump's telephone diplomacy on his birthday was a symbolic move – whether it leads to substantial progress will be decided at the G7 meeting starting Thursday.
