Moscow announces ceasefire for Victory Day

Vienna, May 4, 2026 – Russia has announced a unilateral ceasefire for May 9th. Victory Day over Nazi Germany is the most important holiday of the year for Moscow. At the same time, the Kremlin warned Ukraine against any attempts at disruption during the military parade on Red Square.

Propaganda instead of the will for peace

The announcement from Moscow follows a familiar pattern. In previous years, the Kremlin already used May 9th for symbolic gestures intended to be interpreted internationally as signals of peace. The reality is different. The ceasefire applies exclusively to a limited period around the parade. Moscow needs these hours for undisturbed television images. Tanks rolling through Moscow. Fighter jets in formation. Putin on the podium. These are the images the Kremlin wants. No reports of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory.

Threats as background music

The warning to Kyiv leaves no doubt about Moscow's actual stance. Any attempt to disrupt the celebrations will be met with retaliation. This threat is not only directed at the Ukrainian leadership. It is a message to its own population. The Kremlin is demonstrating strength and control. The ceasefire is not a concession to peace. It is a logistical necessity for its own narrative. Ukrainian military analysts expect Russia to resume hostilities immediately after the celebrations. Possibly even more intensely than before.

International reactions remain subdued

Western governments reacted cautiously to the announcement. The US State Department called it a transparent maneuver. The EU's foreign policy chief instead called for a permanent ceasefire. Kyiv itself has not yet officially commented. Unofficial sources from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense indicated that they had taken note of the Russian announcement. Nothing more. The Ukrainian armed forces remain on high alert. No one in Kyiv believes in a genuine change of heart in Moscow.

The Two Sides of Power

This ceasefire shows both sides of the Kremlin. Outwardly, Moscow presents itself as a reasonable player willing to take breaks in the conflict. Inwardly, the spectacle serves mobilization. May 9th is Russia's identity-defining moment. In the official interpretation, the victory over fascism also legitimizes the current war against the alleged Nazis in Kyiv. The ceasefire is not a sign of de-escalation. It is a breathing space for propaganda. As soon as the last missile has burned out over Red Square, the real missiles will fly again at Ukrainian cities. The West should not be fooled by this staging.
