ByteDance is making Doubao paid: China's AI giant attacks

ByteDance, the Chinese tech giant behind TikTok and Douyin, is facing a strategic move: its in-house AI assistant, Doubao, is set to receive paid subscriptions by the end of June. The announcement is expected to be made at the company's upcoming Force conference, according to the Chinese business portal 36Kr.

Three subscription tiers for different users

Doubao will be offered in three price tiers in the future. The technical integration of the billing systems for the PC and mobile versions is currently in the final phase and is expected to be completed within a month. With this, ByteDance is following the trend of Western competitors such as OpenAI with ChatGPT Plus or Anthropic with Claude Pro. The move marks a turning point: until now, Doubao was available for free, reaching millions of Chinese users. With monetization, ByteDance now wants to generate direct revenue from its AI investment.

Merging AI and Online Commerce

Particularly interesting for market observers is the planned integration with Douyin E-Commerce. The Chinese TikTok variant has long since evolved from an entertainment platform to a shopping machine. In the future, Doubao could make personalized product recommendations, support purchasing decisions, or function as a virtual shopping consultant. This integration gives ByteDance a competitive advantage over pure AI providers: the company controls both the artificial intelligence and the sales channel. Analysts estimate that Douyin's e-commerce revenue will already exceed 300 billion US dollars in 2025.

What does this mean for Europe and Austria?

New opportunities are opening up for Austrian companies looking to serve the Chinese market. AI-powered product placements on Douyin could make it easier to reach Chinese consumers. At the same time, dependence on ByteDance's ecosystem is growing. European AI providers face the challenge of keeping up with the massive user numbers and platform integration of Chinese competitors. The EU Commission is closely monitoring ByteDance's expansion, particularly with regard to data protection and competition law.

The Two Sides of Power

ByteDance's Doubao strategy highlights the strengths of the Chinese tech model: rapid scaling, seamless integration of various services, and a huge domestic market as a testing ground. However, critics warn of increasing market concentration. When a company offers an AI assistant, social media, and e-commerce from a single source, dependencies arise for both merchants and users. Furthermore, questions about data usage remain open. Western regulators will likely be observing closely whether and how ByteDance plans to offer these services outside of China. For the Austrian economy, the development offers opportunities in the China business, but requires vigilant monitoring.
