Israel Announces ‚Full Force‘ in Lebanon Despite Ceasefire
The ceasefire in Lebanon is only a few months old, but Israel reserves the right to strike with full military force at any time. Defense Minister Katz makes it clear: Peace has limits, and Jerusalem defines them.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz sent an unambiguous message to Hezbollah and the international community on Sunday: The Israeli Defense Forces will respond with full military force even during the current ceasefire should Israeli soldiers be threatened in Lebanon. The announcement was made at an event in the occupied West Bank and raises questions about the stability of the fragile ceasefire.
„Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I have instructed the IDF to act with full force—on the ground and from the air—even during the ceasefire, to protect our soldiers in Lebanon from any threat,“ Katz said. These remarks come at a time when the international community is hoping for a lasting de-escalation in the Middle East.
A Ceasefire with Conditions
The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, agreed upon in November 2024, was intended to restore calm after weeks of intense fighting. The agreement calls for Hezbollah to withdraw north of the Litani River, while Israel is to gradually withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon. But the reality is quite different.
Israeli forces remain present in the Lebanese border area. The army cites security concerns and alleges that Hezbollah is not fully complying with the agreements. Lebanese authorities, for their part, complain of regular Israeli overflights and violations of the ceasefire. The UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL is caught between the two sides and is under increasing pressure.
Europe's Difficult Balancing Act
For Austria and the European Union, this development poses a diplomatic challenge. The EU has welcomed the ceasefire and is counting on its observance as the basis for long-term stabilization in the region. At the same time, Israel is an important partner, while Lebanon remains a priority country for European development cooperation.
Austria has been participating in the UNIFIL mission for decades. Israel’s announcement that it will take military action despite the ceasefire significantly increases the risks for international peacekeeping forces. Vienna will have to monitor the situation closely, not least with regard to the safety of its own soldiers in the region.
Netanyahu's Domestic Political Calculations
The harsh rhetoric coming out of Jerusalem also has a domestic political dimension. Prime Minister Netanyahu is under massive pressure from his right-wing coalition partners, who are demanding an uncompromising stance toward Hezbollah. The announcement that Israel is prepared to strike at any time appeals to this base and strengthens Netanyahu’s position within his government.
Critics accuse the Israeli leadership of deliberately undermining the ceasefire. If every perceived threat justifies a military strike, the agreement loses its substance. The question is no longer whether the ceasefire will hold, but how it is defined.
The Two Sides of Power
Israel is once again demonstrating that it prioritizes security over diplomatic agreements. This stance is understandable given the real threats, but it undermines trust in international agreements. Hezbollah, for its part, uses every Israeli action as justification for its own positions. In the end, the civilian population on both sides pays the price for this zero-sum game.
