Chinese Researchers Develop Shatter-Resistant Diamonds

A team of Chinese scientists has developed a diamond that can withstand even a powerful hammer blow without shattering. The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal *Nature Synthesis*. Although diamond is considered the hardest naturally occurring material on Earth, it is also as brittle as glass and can shatter upon a sharp impact. The researchers have apparently now overcome this very weakness.

The Problem of Materials Science

In materials science, hardness and toughness are traditionally considered opposing properties. Making a material harder usually means making it more brittle and thus more prone to fracture. Conversely, tougher materials often lose some of their hardness. This dilemma has puzzled scientists for decades, particularly in the case of diamond, whose extreme hardness has, until now, always been accompanied by structural vulnerability.

The Scientific Approach

According to the publication, the research group was able to develop a crystal structure that combines both properties simultaneously: the hardness of diamond and a toughness that prevents fractures even under heavy mechanical stress. Details on the exact synthesis method and the participating institutions were published in the scientific journal, which is known for its rigorous peer review by independent experts. The „South China Morning Post“ was the first international media outlet to report on the study.

Possible Areas of Application

Super-hard yet fracture-resistant materials are of interest to numerous industries. These include, for example, cutting tools, mining drill bits, protective equipment, and components used in semiconductor manufacturing, where precision tools must withstand extreme stresses. Materials with this combination of hardness and toughness have also long been sought after in the aerospace and defense sectors.

For European industry, this development is significant above all as an indication of the extent to which China is now investing in basic research on new materials. Austrian and European companies in the toolmaking sector—for example, in Styria or Upper Austria, where carbide and diamond tools have traditionally played an important role—are closely monitoring technological advances in superhard materials. If the new crystal structure can be scaled up for industrial use, this could, in the long term, also affect supply chains and competitive positions in the European precision tool industry. However, experts say that years of further research will likely be needed before commercial application becomes a reality.
