Topgolf Wuhan: How a U.S. Concept is Revolutionizing China – and Chinese Partners are Taking Over

Wuhan, April 2026 – For a long time, golf in China was a sport for the elite. Consequently, Wuhan has only a manageable number of 3,000 players – in a city of 15 million inhabitants. Topgolf wanted to change that: affordable golf for everyone, an American concept, a Chinese market.

A concept from the USA

Topgolf changed the rules: No complicated etiquette, no expensive memberships, no full day on the course.

Instead, consumers are offered a multifunctional entertainment center where golf becomes a leisure activity on a „driving range.“ The model for this came from the USA, where such centers exist throughout the country.

Topgolf invested $30 million in the land, building, software, and hardware.

More than 100 employees work there now. The American company is slowly withdrawing, and Chinese partners will continue the business.

This is a well-known pattern: Western companies open the market – and then Chinese companies take it over themselves.

Who benefits?

Western brands bring concepts to China. China learns, adapts, buys, and improves on Western concepts.

In the case of Topgolf, a comparatively unknown sport has now arrived in the metropolis of Wuhan and is being used by thousands of people for extensive leisure activities.
