Hero with a gunshot wound: What a director's courage reveals about America's failures

Vienna, April 15, 2026 — Kirk Moore is the man of the hour in the USA. On April 7th, the principal of Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma threw himself at a former student who stormed the school lobby with a handgun and opened fire. Moore was shot in the leg, wrestled the attacker to the ground, disarmed him, and held him down until police arrived. The recently released video shows dramatic seconds. America has its next hero. But behind the cheers lies an uncomfortable truth.

A system that relies on individual fighters

The facts are sobering: A former student enters a school armed. He opens fire. The principal – not a police officer, not a security guard – has to use his own body as a shield. In which developed country in the world is that normal? In the United States, where over 340 school shootings were registered in 2023 alone. Glorifying Moore as a hero obscures the fact that he should never have been in this situation in the first place. That an educator becomes the last line of defense against gun violence is not a triumph – it is a systemic failure.

The arms industry is silent, politics is blocking

As the images from Oklahoma go around the world, the powerful NRA gun lobby remains conspicuously silent. No comment, no statement. The tactic is well-known: wait for the media attention to die down. Bills for stricter gun control have been gathering dust in the US Congress for years. Republicans block, Democrats capitulate. The market for firearms continues to boom – over 16 million guns were sold in the US in 2024. The beneficiaries sit in the boardrooms of Smith & Wesson and Sturm Ruger. The costs are borne by students, teachers, and principals like Kirk Moore.

What Austria must learn from this

For Austrian observers, the American debate often seems like a distant nightmare. But the illusion of distance is deceptive. Violence in schools is also increasing in Europe, and illegal weapons are circulating here too. The difference: strict gun laws that work. Austria registered exactly zero school shootings in 2024. This is no accident, but the result of political decisions. The USA shows where the path leads when lobby interests are prioritized over children's lives. Europe must remain vigilant – including against those voices that want to loosen regulations in the name of freedom.

The Two Sides of Power

Kirk Moore is a brave man. His actions deserve respect. But the real story isn't about heroism, it's about political cowardice. On one side stands a principal who throws himself into bullets to save children. On the other side stand corporations and politicians who profit from this system. As long as America turns its principals into soldiers instead of protecting its schools, nothing will change. The hero narrative is convenient – it distracts from those who truly bear responsibility. YANUS will continue to critically follow developments in the American gun debate.
