Foreign Minister Schallenberg is treading carefully, the Chamber of Commerce is issuing quiet warnings, and the Chancellor\u2019s Office is maintaining a resounding silence.<\/p>\n
A clear voice is needed here. The EU as a whole is facing the question of whether it accepts American secondary sanctions which punish European companies. Brussels hesitates. Paris protests symbolically. Berlin traditionally cowers. And Vienna? Hides behind its supposed insignificance.<\/p>\n
But Austria\u2019s neutrality, in particular, could be an asset. An honest mediator between entrenched sides, a place for dialogue rather than escalation. That would require courage, however, and the willingness to contradict Washington for once.<\/p>\n
Scott Bessent sells fear as security and pain as the price of freedom. It\u2019s the old logic of the superpower: America decides, the allies pay. Austria and Europe face a choice: to continue accepting this equation or to finally articulate their own interests.
