Lufthansa had planned to celebrate its 100th anniversary in style. Instead, its planes are grounded. Pilots from the Cockpit union have announced additional strike days for Thursday and Friday. Cabin crew have been on strike since the beginning of the week. As a result, Europe’s largest airline group is facing a full week of groundings, dragging the entire continent’s air traffic into the turmoil.

A hundred years and not a bit wiser

The timing couldn't be more symbolic. While management in Frankfurt was planning lavish anniversary events, things were simmering in the cockpits and cabins. Pilots have been demanding better working conditions and pay adjustments that keep pace with inflation for months. Cabin crew are simultaneously fighting for higher base salaries and fewer overtime hours. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr speaks of „disproportionate demands.“ The unions counter: the company has made billions in profits in 2024, while the staff bore the brunt of the Corona crisis with short-time work and pay cuts.

Austria as collateral damage

For Austrian travelers, the situation is becoming a test of patience. Austrian Airlines, a Lufthansa subsidiary since 2009, is not formally affected by the strike. But the ties within the group are close. Codeshare flights are being canceled, and connecting flights via Frankfurt and Munich have become a lottery. Vienna International Airport has already reported dozens of canceled flights. Business travelers are switching to trains, and vacationers are rebooking their trips. The travel industry estimates the damage to the Austrian economy at several million euros per day of the strike. And who ends up paying? The passengers, who—despite EU air passenger rights—often wait months for compensation.

The silent power struggle behind the scenes

Behind the open labor dispute, a strategic conflict is raging. Lufthansa has expanded aggressively in recent years, acquiring companies ranging from Brussels Airlines to parts of the insolvent Alitalia. That cost billions. At the same time, low-cost carriers like Ryanair are squeezing margins. Management is trying to cut costs wherever possible. Staff are expected to become more flexible, and productivity is set to rise. The unions suspect a backdoor erosion of social benefits. This is no longer just about percentage points in salary. It’s about the question of what the future of European aviation should look like: with fairly paid crews, or according to the low-cost model that relies on temporary workers and rock-bottom wages.

The Two Sides of Power

Lufthansa is celebrating 100 years of history. Yet the present reveals a company caught in a contradiction: it wants to operate globally, but is cutting back on staff. It’s celebrating its anniversary while its own workforce is on strike. For Austria, this case serves as a lesson. Austrian Airlines may be a separate brand, but the strings are pulled in Frankfurt. When pilots there walk off the job, the impact is felt all the way to Schwechat. YANUS continues to track developments in European aviation, particularly where corporate interests and workers’ rights clash.

Just in time for its 100th anniversary, the staff of Germany’s flagship airline is bringing the company to a standstill.
