Budapest \u2013 After 16 years in power, Viktor Orb\u00e1n has been voted out in the Hungarian parliamentary elections. 45-year-old P\u00e9ter Magyar, once part of the Orb\u00e1n system himself, achieved a convincing election victory and will therefore become the new head of government of neighboring Austria.<\/p>\n
The political landslide comes as a surprise to many observers. Magyar, who as a former insider knew the Orb\u00e1n system up close, managed to convince a majority of Hungarian voters of a new beginning. His campaign apparently successfully capitalized on the population's fatigue after almost two decades of Fidesz rule.<\/p>\n
This change of power is of considerable significance for Austria. Relations between Vienna and Budapest have been marked by recurring tensions under Orb\u00e1n \u2013 particularly on issues of EU policy, the rule of law, and migration policy. It remains to be seen whether a new era of cooperation will begin under Magyar.
