The coalition is arguing over energy relief, the conscription debate is returning – and the economy is waiting for clarity.

Vienna, April 12, 2026 – Germany is Europe's largest economy. And it is currently under maximum pressure.

Energy prices: Coalition without agreement

Under intense pressure, the coalition is struggling to provide relief for citizens due to energy prices. The conflict between the Minister for Economic Affairs and the Minister of Finance now personally concerns the Chancellor.

Economy Minister Reiche wants market solutions. Finance Minister Klingbeil wants relief for citizens. Chancellor Merz wants no price caps and no windfall tax. And the citizens simply want cheaper electricity and gasoline.

The result: paralysis. While Berlin debates, prices are rising.

Conscription: The Issue Returns

The chairman of the Junge Union is calling for the reintroduction of conscription as early as next January. The Bundeswehr needs people. Europe is rearming. And the old debate is back – this time with more urgency.

What that means for Austria

If Germany reintroduces conscription, pressure on Austria will grow. Neutrality does not protect against this debate. It only postpones it.

Austria never abolished conscription. But the question is: Is it still what it used to be today?

The Two Sides of Power

Germany is paralyzed because three major questions remain unresolved simultaneously: energy, defense, and economic growth. This is not a weakness of the coalition – it is the complexity of the times. But complexity is no excuse for inaction.

YANUS continues to analyze: What Austria can learn from Germany's energy debate.

Berlin is fighting on three fronts simultaneously.
