In the Longgang district of Shenzhen, a humanoid robot has been stationed at an intersection for several weeks, taking on tasks that were previously the exclusive domain of traffic police officers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The machine analyzes traffic conditions using a computer vision system, detects traffic violations, issues acoustic warnings, and makes hand signals to drivers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its movements are synchronized with traffic light cycles, allowing it to give instructions for going straight, turning, or stopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the system detects, for example, cyclists without helmets or vehicles stopping behind the stop line, the violation is documented and a warning is issued immediately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Chinese media reports, similar systems are planned to be used in the future for alcohol checks, emergency care at accident scenes, and evidence collection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Shenzhen city administration had already launched a more comprehensive robot-supported traffic monitoring system in July, which combines humanoid robots, autonomous patrol vehicles, parking space control robots, four-legged robot dogs, and drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The humanoid robots are not limited to traffic. In August, comparable models were already deployed in Shenzhen in restaurants, postal services, and other public locations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The city is thus developing into a large-scale test field for so-called physical artificial intelligence, that is, AI systems that not only act digitally but interact in real time with their physical environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is as yet no question of a complete replacement of human police officers. The robot systems take on clearly defined, repetitive tasks and have no official authority whatsoever, such as making arrests or issuing fines. Human officers remain responsible for decisions, escalations, and legally binding measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the approximately 17.7 million inhabitants of Shenzhen, the sight of a robot in police uniform at a busy intersection has become a familiar street image in a short time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For European companies, Shenzhen is of particular interest as a location because central suppliers of the global robotics and sensor industry are based here, such as in the vicinity of manufacturers like UBTech or Unitree, which also export to Europe. German and Austrian machinery manufacturers and sensor producers, including companies in the automation industry sector, observe such urban pilot projects as an indicator of future mass markets for service robotics. Concrete cooperations between Austrian authorities or municipalities and Chinese providers do not yet exist, and direct market entry of comparable systems in the EU would have to meet strict approval and data protection requirements of the European AI Regulation, which provides significantly more restrictive rules for high-risk applications in public spaces than the Chinese legal framework.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
