The deal would be valued at around $400 billion and would create the world’s fourth-largest pharmaceutical company by market capitalization. Neither company has yet officially commented on the negotiations.

Two industry heavyweights

AstraZeneca employs over 90,000 people worldwide and most recently reported annual revenue of more than $54 billion, generated in part by cancer and diabetes drugs. Bristol Myers Squibb, known for its treatments for cancer and cardiovascular diseases, reported revenue of approximately $45 billion in 2023. A merger would create a company with combined annual revenue in the range of $100 billion.

Why Consolidation Is on the Rise in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Major pharmaceutical companies are facing the expiration of numerous patents in the coming years, which is driving them to pursue acquisitions and mergers to secure new research pipelines. AstraZeneca has already acquired several smaller biotech companies in recent years, such as Alexion Pharmaceuticals in 2021 for about $39 billion. Bristol Myers Squibb, for its part, acquired Celgene in 2019 for about $74 billion to strengthen its oncology division.

Impact on Locations and Employment

AstraZeneca does not operate any large production facilities in Austria, but it does have sales and marketing operations employing several hundred people. Mergers of this magnitude typically result in overlaps in administration, sales, and research, which could also affect locations in Europe in the medium term. No specific statements have been made yet regarding possible impacts on Austrian branches.

For European patients and healthcare systems, the market power of the new pharmaceutical giants is significant because it can influence price negotiations with health insurers and national health authorities. In Austria, the Main Association of Social Insurance Institutions negotiates reimbursement prices for new drugs; a larger company with a broader portfolio could bring both greater negotiating flexibility and greater bargaining power to the table. Should the deal be officially announced, the EU competition authority is likely to scrutinize it closely due to its size, similar to its approach with previous pharmaceutical mergers of this magnitude.

Source: International homepage | Original Article

A $400 billion deal would reshape the pharmaceutical landscape.
