What this means for Austrian and German companies.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vienna, April 6, 2026 \u2013 It was April 2, 2025 \u2013 the so-called \u201eLiberation Day.\u201c Donald Trump announced comprehensive tariffs on almost all imports into the USA in the Rose Garden of the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A year later, the consequences are noticeable\u2014and more lasting than many had hoped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Europe's Dilemma<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">European companies are caught between three fronts: American protectionism, Chinese<br>Overcapacity, regional political instability. Business confidence is shaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Germany, the profit margin of companies outside the financial sector has in the last three<br>fallen by 5 percentage points over years \u2013 significantly more in some industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Regarding Austria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Austria's export economy is heavily dependent on stable trade relations. Mechanical engineering, automotive suppliers, chemicals \u2013 all these sectors are feeling the headwinds from Washington and Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, Germany's trade with Eastern Europe is growing more strongly than its overall foreign trade. Poland is gaining importance as a partner. An opportunity \u2013 but also a last resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The New Normal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Economists expect global growth of 2.4 to 2.5 percent for 2026 \u2013 below pre-crisis levels. The recession is over. A real recovery is not materializing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Two Sides of Power<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tariffs are not economic policy \u2013 they are power politics.
