Not because of his costume, but because of his vision: to serve spicy crayfish soup to astronauts on Mars. Drew Endy, a professor at Stanford University and director of biostrategy at the Hoover Institution, presented this encounter from a scientific conference in Paris as a symbol of China\u2019s ambitious research agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Symbolism of a Senate Hearing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The anecdote may seem curious, but it struck a nerve in Washington. The young researcher is working in synthetic biology, a field that could make food production in space possible. His presentation at the Paris conference last fall showcased concrete progress in the cultivation of proteins under extreme conditions. For U.S. senators, the \u201ccancer in a suit\u201d became a warning sign: China is investing heavily in future technologies, while America is still debating the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Endy emphasized before the committee that Beijing invests over $500 billion annually in research and development, a 14 percent increase over the previous year. Although the U.S. still leads with about $680 billion, its growth rate is only 5 percent. In the fields of synthetic biology, quantum computing, and certain AI applications, American experts already view China as being on par with or even ahead of the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Technological Race with Geopolitical Consequences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Senate hearing took place against the backdrop of tightened export controls. Since 2022, Washington has been attempting to restrict China\u2019s access to high-performance chips and semiconductor manufacturing technology. Beijing responded with massive investments in its own production capacity. The Chinese chip manufacturer SMIC is now producing 7-nanometer chips\u2014a technological leap that Western analysts had not expected before 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientific collaboration between American and Chinese universities has declined by 38 percent since 2020. At the same time, China is stepping up its cooperation with European research institutions. ETH Zurich, the Technical University of Munich, and Austrian institutions such as the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) are seeing an increase in inquiries from Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Classification for Austrian readers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This development has direct implications for Austria. In 2025, the country exported goods worth 4.8 billion euros to China, including machinery, automotive parts, and, increasingly, specialized technology. At the same time, Austrian companies such as AT&amp;S, which has plants in Chongqing, are deeply integrated into Chinese supply chains. The printed circuit board manufacturer generates about 45 percent of its revenue in Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Austrian Academy of Sciences has had a cooperation agreement with the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2019. In times of transatlantic tensions, Vienna could serve as a bridge\u2014or find itself caught between the two sides.
