In the first half of 2026, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer delivered only 122,306 vehicles worldwide, a 16 percent decline compared with the same period last year. Particularly alarming: In China, which for years has been the most important single market for the Volkswagen subsidiary, deliveries plummeted by nearly a third.

A Double Burden from the East and the West

Porsche cites two main reasons for its weak performance: challenging market conditions in China and the phase-out of tax credits for electric vehicles in the U.S. In China, the brand is battling a wave of domestic competitors offering technologically advanced electric vehicles at significantly lower prices. Manufacturers such as BYD, NIO, and Xiaomi have long had their sights set on the premium segment and are putting massive price pressure on established Western brands. Although Porsche emphasizes that it remains focused on a „quality-oriented business strategy,“ the numbers tell a different story. The Chinese automotive market is undergoing a fundamental transformation: In June 2026, electric vehicles reached a market share of over 50 percent of new registrations for the first time, dominated by domestic manufacturers.

Structural Shift in the Global Auto Market

Porsche’s slump is symptomatic of the crisis facing European premium automakers in Asia. Mercedes-Benz and BMW also reported declining sales figures in China, albeit to a lesser extent. The causes are structural in nature: Chinese consumers, once status-conscious buyers of Western luxury brands, are increasingly focusing on technological features such as autonomous driving and connectivity—areas in which Chinese manufacturers are now leading the way. Added to this is a shift in consumer sentiment: economic uncertainty in China is significantly dampening the appetite for purchases in the premium segment.

What that means for Austria

For the Austrian economy, Porsche’s figures are more than just a footnote from Stuttgart. The domestic automotive supply industry is closely intertwined with German manufacturers: Around 300 Austrian companies supply the German auto industry, including Magna Steyr, AVL List, and numerous small and medium-sized enterprises. A sustained decline in sales at Porsche and other Volkswagen Group brands directly affects jobs in Graz, Vienna, and Upper Austria. Austrian suppliers’ dependence on the internal combustion engine business makes them particularly vulnerable to the shift toward electric vehicles. Porsche itself does not operate any production facilities in Austria, but its supply chain extends deep into the country. Porsche Holding, based in Salzburg—Europe’s largest automotive retail company—is also likely to be affected by the decline in sales. In the first half of 2026, Porsche delivered only about 40,000 vehicles in China; three years ago, the figure was over 60,000 during the same period.

Source: TechNode | Original Article

The German sports car manufacturer delivered 16 percent fewer vehicles worldwide in the first half of 2026.
