The round was led by the U.S. healthcare investor Vivo Capital, with participation from Gold Mine Multi Family Office as well as existing investors Kingray Capital and TigerYeah Capital. The funding is intended to advance the development of genetically engineered animal platforms and bring a fully human antibody rabbit platform to market.

Antibodies from rabbits

Immunocan specializes in the development of so-called antibody discovery platforms. Its core product: genetically modified rabbits whose immune systems produce fully human antibodies. This technology could accelerate the development of new drugs, as the antibodies obtained are better tolerated by the human body than those produced conventionally. For the pharmaceutical industry, this means potentially shorter development times and lower costs in the search for new active ingredients to treat cancer, autoimmune diseases, or infections.

Western Capital Meets Chinese Innovation

What is notable about this funding round is the composition of the investors. Vivo Capital, an established U.S. healthcare fund that manages over $20 billion worldwide, is joining the round. This comes at a time when geopolitical tensions between Washington and Beijing are escalating, particularly in the technology sector. Apparently, Western investors continue to see opportunities in the Chinese biotech sector that outweigh the political risk. For Chinese startups, in turn, international capital remains an important indicator of quality and credibility on the global market.

What does that mean for Austria?

Austria's pharmaceutical industry and research institutions are closely monitoring developments in China.

Domestic companies such as Boehringer Ingelheim, with its Vienna location, or the numerous biotech startups associated with universities could emerge in the future as both customers and competitors of platforms like Immunocan. The technology of genetically modified animal models is also an active field of research in Europe.

China's progress is increasing competitive pressure, but it could also open up opportunities for cooperation, such as in the field of preclinical research.

The Two Sides of Power

China’s biotech sector is growing rapidly, fueled by government support and international capital. This opens up opportunities: faster drug development, new therapies, and global partnerships. At the same time, genetically modified animal models raise ethical questions that are subject to stricter regulation in Europe than in China. Furthermore, it remains unclear how stricter export and investment controls will affect cooperation. Austrian stakeholders must closely monitor technological developments without succumbing to naive euphoria or blanket rejection.

Source: TechNode | Original Article

Shanghai-based antibody specialist receives massive funding for genetically engineered animal platforms.
