Vienna, April 25, 2026. Mali is once again plunging into chaos. In a coordinated offensive on Friday, jihadist groups simultaneously attacked several cities in the central and northern parts of the West African country. Eyewitnesses report heavy explosions and hours-long firefights. This is the largest attack of its kind in years, a sign that the battle for the Sahel is entering a new phase.<\/p>\n
According to reports, the attacks targeted military facilities and government buildings in at least three regions. In the strategically important city of Mopti, in the center of the country, explosions could be heard as far out as the outskirts. Residents in Timbuktu and Gao in the north also reported heavy fighting. The Malian military junta initially confirmed only one attack but spoke of significant losses on the part of the attackers. These claims cannot be independently verified. International observers believe that both the group JNIM, an al-Qaeda affiliate, and the Islamic State in the Sahara could be behind the operations.<\/p>\n
The escalation comes as no surprise. Since the withdrawal of French troops in 2022 and the end of the UN mission MINUSMA in 2023, the security vacuum has widened dramatically. The Malian junta turned to Russian Wagner mercenaries\u2014now operating under the name Africa Corps\u2014as a replacement. However, their presence has not curbed the jihadist threat but merely shifted it. Critics accuse the junta of focusing more on retaining power than on protecting the population. The humanitarian situation is catastrophic: More than 400,000 people fled within Mali last year alone.<\/p>\n
For Austria and Europe, this development is more than just a distant crisis. The Sahel region is considered a transit area for migration routes to North Africa and onward across the Mediterranean. Instability in Mali means less border control, increased movement, and greater pressure on Europe\u2019s external borders. Added to this is the threat of terrorism: European intelligence agencies have been warning for years that fighters are being trained in the uncontrolled areas of the Sahel who could later return to Europe. The EU has already adjusted its Sahel strategy several times, but without a military presence on the ground, its influence remains limited. Austria is not currently participating in any active missions in the region.<\/p>\n
Mali exemplifies a dilemma that extends far beyond Africa. On the one hand, there are military juntas that preach sovereignty but rely on foreign mercenaries. On the other hand, there are Western nations that are pulling back but must fear the consequences. The jihadists are exploiting this vacuum\u2014professionally, brutally, and with a growing reach.
