Instead, they have created a competitor rolling up global markets with a simple formula: sufficient performance for half the price. While American tech giants battle for AI supremacy, China is conquering the mass market for consumers – from the automotive sector to consumer electronics.

The Unintended Catalyst

When the Trump administration began cutting off Chinese tech companies from accessing Western chips in 2019, the message was clear: Without our technology, you're sunk. The Biden administration further tightened the course. However, Beijing responded with massive investments in its domestic semiconductor industry. Between 2020 and 2025 alone, over $150 billion flowed into building its own production capacities.

The result is remarkable. Chinese manufacturers like SMIC, Hua Hong, and numerous smaller producers are now supplying chips that, while unable to compete with the latest processors from NVIDIA or AMD, are perfectly adequate for 80 percent of all applications. And at prices that Western providers cannot match.

Good enough for the world market

The strategy follows a familiar pattern. As was once the case with solar panels, electric cars, and batteries, China is not relying on technological superiority, but on aggressive pricing and rapid scaling. A Chinese microcontroller for household appliances today often costs only a third of its Taiwanese counterpart. For chips used in electric cars, the price advantage is around 40 percent.

This is a tricky situation for European industrial companies. The temptation to switch to cheaper Chinese components is great, especially during times of high production costs and economic downturn. At the same time, political pressure is growing to diversify supply chains and reduce dependence on China. A dilemma without an easy solution.

The gap at the top remains

For high-performance chips used in AI training, data centers, and military applications, the gap remains considerable. NVIDIA dominates the generative AI market with its H100 and Blackwell processors. China's best indigenous developments lag at least two to three generations behind.

However, this lead is shrinking faster than expected. Huawei surprised in 2023 with the Ascend chip, which astonished Western experts. The question is no longer whether, but when China will become competitive in this segment as well. Analysts at the Semiconductor Industry Association estimate the timeframe at five to seven years – assuming sanctions remain at their current level.

The Two Sides of Power

The chip sanctions reveal a fundamental problem with Western economic policy: short-term pinpricks can strengthen the opponent in the long run. China has been forced to invest in self-sufficiency – and in doing so has opened up a market that the tech elite from Silicon Valley long ignored: the market for „good enough“ technology. The uncomfortable question for Europe now is how much dependence on which rival is acceptable. YANUS will continue to follow this topic.

Washington wanted to cut off Beijing's technological oxygen supply.
