Vienna, April 19, 2026 \u2014 The police chief of the Ukrainian region of Rivne has submitted his resignation. The reason: officers from his unit allegedly fled during a deadly attack instead of protecting civilians. Ukrainian authorities have suspended the police officers involved and launched an investigation. The case highlights the immense strain on Ukrainian security forces \u2013 and the question of how much discipline can still be maintained under constant shelling.<\/p>\n
According to Ukrainian authorities, the incident occurred during an attack in which several people were killed. The exact circumstances are still being investigated, but the accusations are serious: police officers allegedly abandoned their posts as the situation escalated. Instead of intervening or coordinating aid, they are said to have fled to safety. The regional police chief drew the consequences and resigned \u2013 an unusual step in a country at war for over two years. The suspended officers now face disciplinary proceedings.
