Yet behind this facade of innocence lies a political calculation that extends far beyond a New York daycare center.<\/p>\n
Mamdani has been in office for a good 100 days and is facing a severe test. As the left-wing mayor of the largest US city, he must work with a Republican president who views socialist policies as an enemy. Trump controls federal funds, immigration agencies, and the national agenda. Mamdani needs Washington \u2013 whether he likes it or not.<\/p>\n
At the same time, he cannot alienate his base. Progressive voters in New York expect resistance, not compromise with the Trump administration. The meeting with Obama is therefore no coincidence. It's a signal: Look, I still belong with you.<\/p>\n
The former president has kept a low profile publicly for years. But his appearance alongside Mamdani speaks volumes. Obama is thus legitimizing the young socialist, who is too radical for many establishment Democrats. It is a knighthood for Mamdani \u2013 and a calculated move by Obama.<\/p>\n

A power struggle for the future of the party is raging between the moderate wing around figures like Gavin Newsom and the progressive forces around Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
